Trabant cars were compact vehicles produced in East Germany by VEB Sachsenring, primarily as affordable transportation for families in the former German Democratic Republic. The best-known model, the Trabant 601, used a small air-cooled two-stroke engine, front-wheel drive, and lightweight body panels made from Duroplast, a fiber-reinforced plastic. Its simple mechanical layout made repairs relatively straightforward, though performance, comfort, and emissions were modest even by contemporary standards. Long waiting lists and limited consumer choice helped make the Trabant a common sight across Eastern Europe. Today, it is remembered less for technical sophistication than for its cultural significance, distinctive engine note, and lasting connection to everyday life behind the Iron Curtain.
