The first-generation Windstar was Ford’s attempt to give the family minivan a more car-like feel, replacing the traditional truck-derived approach with front-wheel drive and a transverse engine. Its rounded body and low floor helped establish a more modern interpretation of the American family van, while the cabin could accommodate seven people. Sliding-door practicality and generous interior volume made it especially suited to families who needed flexibility rather than outright performance.
For 1994–1998, the 3.0-liter Vulcan V6 produced 146 hp and 164 lb-ft, working through a four-speed automatic transmission. Those figures were never about speed; instead, the Windstar’s appeal came from the useful balance between a relatively compact powertrain and a spacious passenger compartment. With up to 60 cubic feet of luggage capacity, it could adapt easily as passenger and cargo needs changed. The Windstar helped establish the layout and philosophy that would define Ford’s minivan lineup for years afterward.
