The VehiCROSS was one of Isuzu’s boldest departures from conventional SUV design, turning a compact off-roader into something that looked almost like a concept car brought to production. Its short wheelbase, heavily sculpted body and unusual protective cladding were matched by a chassis designed for genuine off-road work. Rather than hiding its mechanical purpose, Isuzu made the VehiCROSS deliberately unconventional, creating an SUV that could stand out on the street while retaining the rugged engineering associated with the brand’s larger four-wheel-drive models.
The 1997–1999 VehiCROSS 3.2 uses a naturally aspirated 3.2-liter V6 producing 215 hp and 209 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed automatic transmission works with Isuzu’s Torque-On-Demand four-wheel-drive system, while 0–60 mph takes 9.4 seconds and top speed reaches 106 mph. The combination of compact dimensions and electronically managed four-wheel drive gives this unusual SUV both everyday road manners and genuine off-road capability.
