The VehiCROSS 3.5 took Isuzu’s already unconventional SUV idea and gave it a larger engine without losing the concept’s distinctive character. Its short, heavily sculpted body looked more like a futuristic show car than a conventional off-roader, while the compact cabin and pronounced wheel arches emphasized its unusual proportions. Underneath, Isuzu retained the electronically controlled four-wheel-drive system that made the VehiCROSS technically interesting. The result was a rare combination of striking design, compact dimensions and genuine off-road engineering.
The 1999–2001 VehiCROSS 3.5 uses a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 producing 215 hp and 230 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed automatic transmission sends power through four-wheel drive, with 0–60 mph taking 8.5 seconds and top speed reaching 115 mph. The front-mounted V6 and multi-link rear suspension give this unusual SUV a practical mechanical foundation while its Torque-On-Demand system adds capability beyond its road-focused appearance.
