The Mitsubishi Carisma GDI arrived at a time when direct fuel injection was becoming an important route toward better petrol-engine efficiency. Rather than giving the family saloon a sporty makeover, Mitsubishi focused on refining how its engine used fuel while preserving the space and everyday comfort buyers expected. The Carisma's understated styling, conventional four-door layout, and front-wheel-drive configuration reflect its practical European-market role. Its engineering story is what makes this version distinctive: the GDI system brought a more advanced approach to combustion into an otherwise approachable family car, balancing sensible performance with the promise of improved economy.
For 1999–2002, the Carisma GDI uses a naturally aspirated 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine producing 123 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque. Power reaches the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission, with a four-speed automatic also available. The saloon reaches 124 mph and provides seating for five alongside a 17-cubic-foot luggage compartment, making it a capable everyday family car rather than a performance-focused model.
