The Proton Wira 416 GLSi offered practical compact-saloon motoring with familiar Mitsubishi-derived engineering and a straightforward design. Its four-door body, restrained styling, and front-wheel-drive layout made it well suited to commuting and everyday family transport. Rather than prioritising sporty performance, the GLSi focused on accessible power, a functional cabin, and manageable everyday usability. Its separate boot provided useful space for shopping and travel essentials, while its compact dimensions made it convenient for urban driving. As part of Proton’s Wira range, the 416 GLSi represented a practical approach to affordable motoring, combining conventional engineering with a naturally aspirated petrol engine.
For the 1999–2002 range, power came from a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre, 16-valve inline-four producing 94 hp at 5,500 rpm and 100 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sent power to the front wheels. With a top speed of 112 mph and a 0–60 mph time of 10.5 seconds, the 416 GLSi delivered modest performance suited to everyday driving. Its five-seat cabin and 13.6 cubic feet of luggage capacity supported routine family use, while MacPherson-strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension completed its practical compact-saloon package.
