The Proton Wira 415 GLSi offered practical compact-car motoring through a five-door fastback design that balanced passenger accommodation with useful cargo flexibility. Its restrained styling, conventional front-wheel-drive layout, and functional cabin made it well suited to commuting and everyday family transport. The rear hatch provided convenient access to the luggage area, while the compact dimensions helped make the car manageable on urban roads. Drawing on engineering shared with Mitsubishi’s compact-car platform, the Wira combined familiar mechanical foundations with Proton’s own identity in the Malaysian automotive market. Rather than chasing sporty performance, the 415 GLSi focused on straightforward usability and accessible running costs.
For the 1999–2000 range, power came from a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre, 12-valve inline-four producing 86 hp at 6,000 rpm and 92 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. Buyers could choose a five-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission, both driving the front wheels. With a top speed of 107 mph and a 0–60 mph time of 11.7 seconds, the 415 GLSi prioritised everyday driving over outright acceleration. Its five-seat cabin and 14.7 cubic feet of luggage capacity provided useful flexibility for errands and family journeys, making it a practical compact car for routine use.
