The Proton Wira 415 GLSi offered practical compact-car motoring through a five-door fastback design that balanced everyday usability with useful cargo space. Its restrained styling, front-wheel-drive layout, and conventional cabin reflected a straightforward approach to affordable transport, while the rear hatch made loading shopping and travel essentials easier than in a traditional saloon. Drawing on engineering shared with Mitsubishi’s compact-car platform, the Wira combined familiar mechanical foundations with Proton’s own identity in the Malaysian automotive market. Rather than chasing sporty performance, the 415 GLSi focused on manageable dimensions, accessible power, and the flexibility needed for commuting and family journeys.
For the 1994–1999 range, power came from a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre, 12-valve inline-four producing 89 hp at 6,000 rpm and 93 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. A five-speed manual transmission sent power to the front wheels. With a top speed of 107 mph and a 0–60 mph time of 11.7 seconds, the 415 GLSi prioritised everyday usability over outright acceleration. Its five-seat cabin and 14.7 cubic feet of luggage capacity provided practical room for passengers and belongings, while MacPherson-strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension completed its conventional compact-car package.
