The Proton Wira 416 GLXi brought practical Malaysian motoring together with the familiar engineering foundations of a Mitsubishi-derived compact car. Its five-door fastback body offered a useful blend of passenger space and cargo flexibility, while the restrained styling and front-wheel-drive layout kept the design focused on everyday usability. Rather than pursuing outright sporting performance, the GLXi emphasised accessible power, a functional cabin, and manageable dimensions for urban driving. The rear hatch made loading luggage and everyday belongings easier than in a conventional saloon, giving this version a versatile character suited to commuting and family use.
For the 1995–1998 range, power came from a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre, 16-valve inline-four producing 111 hp at 6,000 rpm and 101 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sent power to the front wheels. With a top speed of 116 mph and a 0–60 mph time of 10.5 seconds, the 416 GLXi offered balanced performance for routine driving. Its five-seat cabin and 14.7 cubic feet of luggage capacity added everyday practicality, while MacPherson-strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension completed its conventional compact-fastback package.
