The Proton Wira 416 GLSi combined practical compact-car design with a five-door fastback body that made everyday transport more versatile. Its restrained styling and front-wheel-drive layout reflected a straightforward approach to usability, while the rear hatch provided convenient access to the luggage area for shopping, travel essentials, and family belongings. Drawing on engineering shared with Mitsubishi’s compact-car platform, the Wira brought familiar mechanical foundations to Proton’s passenger-car range. Rather than prioritising sporty performance, the 416 GLSi focused on accessible power, manageable dimensions, and a functional five-seat cabin suited to commuting and routine family journeys.
For the 1999–2005 range, power came from a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre, 16-valve inline-four producing 94 hp at 5,500 rpm and 100 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sent power to the front wheels. With a top speed of 112 mph and a 0–60 mph time of 10.5 seconds, the 416 GLSi delivered practical performance for everyday driving. Its five-seat cabin and 14.7 cubic feet of luggage capacity provided useful flexibility for errands and longer trips, making it a functional compact fastback for daily use.
