The Proton Wira 1.6 / 416 GLXi brought practical Malaysian family motoring together with the familiar engineering foundations of a Mitsubishi-derived compact-car platform. Its conventional four-door saloon body, restrained styling, and front-wheel-drive layout made it a straightforward choice for commuting and family transport. Rather than emphasising outright sporting performance, the GLXi focused on everyday usability, accessible power, and a functional cabin. Its compact exterior suited urban driving, while the separate boot provided useful space for shopping, luggage, and weekend trips. The result was a practical compact car with a distinctive place in Proton’s early passenger-car range.
For the 1995–1998 range, power came from a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre, 16-valve inline-four producing 111 hp at 6,000 rpm and 101 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sent power to the front wheels. With a top speed of 116 mph and a 0–60 mph time of 10.5 seconds, the 416 GLXi offered adequate performance for routine driving. Its five-seat cabin and 13.6 cubic feet of luggage capacity supported family use, while MacPherson-strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension completed its conventional compact-saloon package.
