The Volga 31029 represents a period when GAZ was refining a familiar large-sedan design without moving too far from its established identity. Its broad proportions and conservative appearance gave it a purposeful presence, while the straightforward engineering underneath kept the car firmly rooted in traditional Volga thinking. Rather than chasing modern sophistication, the 31029 focused on simple construction and practical road-going ability, making it an interesting example of GAZ’s approach during the 1990s.
For 1996–1997, the 31029 used a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter inline-four producing 99 hp and 134 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual transmission drove the rear wheels, while the carbureted OHV engine kept the powertrain deliberately uncomplicated. The combination suited the car’s relaxed character, emphasizing dependable everyday transport over outright performance.
