The Volga 3111 stands apart from the more familiar GAZ sedans of its era because it represented a much more ambitious interpretation of the marque. Its styling moved away from the conservative shape associated with earlier Volgas, giving the large saloon a smoother, more distinctive appearance while retaining the practical proportions expected from a spacious four-door. Underneath, GAZ kept the engineering relatively conventional, with rear-wheel drive and a longitudinally mounted engine, creating an interesting contrast between its forward-looking design and familiar mechanical philosophy. The result is a particularly unusual chapter in Volga history, especially because the 3111 was produced only briefly.
The 2002–2003 model used a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four producing 134 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. Its 12.5-second 0–60 mph time and 112 mph top speed give it adequate performance for a large sedan, while the 21.2-cubic-foot luggage area reinforces its practical side. With rear-wheel drive and seating for five, the 3111 combined a distinctive exterior with the straightforward road-going layout that remained central to GAZ engineering.
