The Volga 310221 Universal gave GAZ’s familiar large-car formula a more useful shape, turning the traditional sedan concept into a practical estate. Its extended roof and squared-off rear created a purposeful appearance, while the conservative styling kept it closely connected to the Volga family. This was a car aimed less at fashion than function, offering the kind of straightforward wagon character that suited drivers who needed additional versatility without moving away from conventional mechanical engineering.
For 1998–2002, the 310221 Universal used a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter inline-four producing 99 hp and 134 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission sent power to the rear wheels, while the carbureted OHV engine maintained the simple mechanical character of the wagon. That combination made the 310221 a practical extension of the Volga range rather than simply a larger cargo compartment.
