The Volga 3105 was an ambitious departure from the more familiar GAZ sedans, carrying the name into a more upscale and technically sophisticated direction. Its large four-door body retained the restrained, formal character associated with Volga cars, but the engineering underneath was considerably more unusual for the marque. The combination of substantial proportions and all-wheel drive gave the 3105 a different identity from the simpler rear-wheel-drive Volgas that surrounded it in the lineup. It was a rare example of GAZ exploring a more advanced interpretation of its traditional large sedan.
For 1996–1998, the 3105 was powered by a naturally aspirated 3.4-liter V8 producing 168 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed manual transmission and AWD. Its 124 mph top speed and 10.6-second 0–60 mph time gave it performance beyond the more conventional Volga models, while the 18.8 mpg combined figure reflected the larger engine. The V8 and all-wheel-drive system are the key elements that make the 3105 stand apart within GAZ's history.
