The Volga 31022 Universal took the familiar large-Volga formula in a more practical direction, trading the conventional sedan profile for a wagon body with considerably more emphasis on carrying ability. Its long, substantial shape retained the conservative character of the Volga range, but the extended rear section gave it a distinctly more useful purpose. It was the kind of car built for drivers who valued space and straightforward utility without stepping away from traditional rear-wheel-drive engineering.
For 1995–1997, the 31022 Universal used a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter inline-four producing 99 hp and 134 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual transmission drove the rear wheels, while the carbureted OHV engine kept the powertrain simple and easygoing. That combination suited the wagon's practical role, emphasizing dependable everyday hauling rather than performance.
