The Montego Wagon GTi brought a more performance-oriented engine into Austin’s practical estate lineup, using a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four with multi-point fuel injection. Producing 101 hp and 126 lb-ft, it drove the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and reached 109 mph, with 0–60 mph taking 11.1 seconds. The result was a useful blend of straightforward performance and everyday estate-car practicality.

The 1994–1995 wagon offered five doors, five seats and 18–30.4 ft³ of luggage space, giving the car considerable flexibility for passengers and cargo. MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion-beam rear suspension kept the chassis uncomplicated, while vented front discs and rear drums handled braking duties. At 2,535 pounds, the car remained relatively light, complementing its transverse engine layout and fuel-injected powertrain.
