The Montego 1.6 Countryman Wagon focused on uncomplicated family transport, using a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter inline-four with a carburetor and five-speed manual gearbox. Producing 85 hp and 97 lb-ft, the engine powered the front wheels and delivered a 102 mph top speed, with 0–60 mph taking 11.5 seconds. Its modest output was well suited to the car’s practical estate character rather than outright performance.
The 1991–1993 Countryman provided five doors, five seats and 18.4 ft³ of luggage space, giving the wagon useful everyday versatility. MacPherson struts at the front and trailing-arm rear suspension formed a straightforward chassis, while disc front brakes and rear drums kept maintenance relatively simple. At 2,370 pounds, the car remained fairly light, and its 33.6 mpg combined economy complemented the modest 1.6-liter engine and 13.2-gallon fuel tank.
