The Volga 3102-101 carried a more formal identity than many of GAZ’s mainstream large sedans, giving the familiar Volga formula a restrained, executive-style presence. Its design was conservative rather than attention-seeking, with the emphasis placed on a substantial road-going character and straightforward mechanical engineering. That approach suited the car’s role well, preserving the sense of traditional Russian sedan engineering while introducing a more contemporary powertrain for its time.
For 2002–2005, the 3102-101 used a naturally aspirated 2.3-liter inline-four producing 129 hp and 139 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive kept its mechanical layout conventional, while the DOHC engine represented a more modern element of the package. Together, these features gave the large sedan a straightforward character that remained closely connected to the established Volga formula.
