The 310221 Universal gave the aging Volga platform a surprisingly useful final chapter, pairing its familiar wagon shape with a diesel engine aimed at improving everyday efficiency. Its extended body made the car more practical than the standard Volga sedan, while the traditional rear-wheel-drive layout preserved the mechanical character of the family. Rather than being a polished modern estate, it remained a straightforward workhorse with plenty of old-school appeal.
For 2006–2009, the 310221 Universal used a turbocharged 2.1-liter inline-four diesel producing 94 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission drove the rear wheels, giving the wagon a useful balance between relaxed cruising and practical hauling. The diesel powertrain was an important change for this late Volga, adding a more economical character without abandoning the platform’s conventional engineering.
