By the time the Volga name reached the 31105-501, GAZ was refining a familiar sedan rather than reinventing it. The emphasis was on giving a traditional large saloon a fresher mechanical package while preserving the uncomplicated character that had defined the Volga for decades. Its substantial proportions, long wheelbase, and conventional rear-wheel-drive layout created a car intended more for steady long-distance travel and everyday usefulness than for chasing sporting benchmarks. There is something distinctive about that approach: the 31105-501 represents a period when an established Russian design was being updated without abandoning its underlying identity.
For 2007–2010, the 31105-501 was powered by a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter inline-four developing 135 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque, with a five-speed manual sending power to the rear wheels. A 111 mph top speed and 12.4-second 0–60 mph time place its performance firmly in the relaxed-sedan category. The 17.7-cubic-foot luggage capacity and five-seat cabin also underline where this Volga placed its priorities—useful space and straightforward transportation rather than outright acceleration.
