The Volga 31029 belongs to an era when GAZ kept its large sedan deliberately straightforward, favoring familiar engineering over rapid technological change. Its substantial shape and conservative presentation gave it a strong road presence without trying to appear fashionable or sporty. What makes this version interesting is how clearly it reflects the practical philosophy of its period: a roomy traditional sedan built around simple mechanical components and an uncomplicated driving experience.
For 1992–1996, the 31029 used a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter inline-four producing 90 hp and 129 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual transmission drove the rear wheels, while the OHV engine and carburetor kept the powertrain mechanically simple. Those three elements capture much of the car’s character, combining modest performance with the traditional rear-wheel-drive layout that defined this generation of Volga.
