The Chairman CM400S brought Mercedes-influenced engineering and traditional executive-saloon proportions to SsangYong's flagship range. Its long body, rear-wheel-drive layout and understated styling give it a distinctly formal character, while the spacious five-seat cabin and generous luggage compartment make it suited to comfortable long-distance travel. Rather than chasing sporty styling, the Chairman focused on refinement, established mechanical architecture and the feel of a substantial luxury car.
For 1999–2001, the CM400S uses a naturally aspirated 2.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 148 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. A five-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels, and the car reaches a listed top speed of 124 mph. Its MacPherson-strut front suspension and multi-link rear arrangement support the composed road manners expected of an executive saloon.
