The fourth-generation Alto was designed around the realities of everyday city driving, where compact dimensions and low running costs matter more than outright performance. Its upright five-door body makes access to the four-seat cabin straightforward, while the rear bench can be folded to turn a modest passenger compartment into a surprisingly useful cargo space. With a short wheelbase and front-wheel-drive layout, the Alto remains easy to manoeuvre through narrow streets and confined parking areas. Its appeal lies in making basic transport simple, economical and practical.
For 2002–2006, the 1.1-litre naturally aspirated inline-four develops 62 hp and 63 lb·ft of torque at 3,200 rpm. A five-speed manual gearbox drives the front wheels, while the MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear arrangement provide a conventional chassis setup. Its listed 48 mpg combined economy and 1,929 lb curb weight reinforce its role as an economical, lightweight hatchback.
