The Daihatsu YRV 1.0 took the small-MPV concept in a distinctly minimalist direction, using a compact three-cylinder petrol engine rather than chasing performance or complexity. Its naturally aspirated 989 cc unit produces 57 hp and 88 Nm, with front-wheel drive and a choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The modest output suits the YRV’s lightweight, compact character, making it more about easy everyday mobility than rapid acceleration.
For 2003–2006, the YRV 1.0’s strongest quality was its clever use of limited space. Despite its small exterior footprint, the five-door cabin seats five and offers 240–1,076 litres of luggage capacity depending on how the rear seating is configured. A 15.4-second 0–62 mph time makes its priorities clear, but the compact dimensions, simple drivetrain and low-capacity engine give this little Daihatsu an uncomplicated urban character. It is a good example of early-2000s Japanese engineering focused on efficiency and practical packaging.
