The Daihatsu YRV 1.3 was a compact MPV that prioritized clever packaging over conventional styling or outright performance. Its naturally aspirated 1.3-litre four-cylinder produces 86 hp and 89 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. With front-wheel drive, a transverse engine layout and straightforward mechanical hardware, it delivers the kind of uncomplicated driving experience that suited its small-car dimensions and urban-focused character.
For 2001–2006, the YRV’s appeal came from making a small footprint surprisingly useful. Its five-door body accommodates five occupants, while the flexible 8.5–38-cubic-foot luggage area gives it considerably more carrying versatility than its compact exterior suggests. The 10.8-second 0–60 mph time is adequate for everyday driving, but practicality is clearly the priority. The result is a distinctive little MPV that combines efficient packaging, modest running demands and simple engineering in a way that feels particularly characteristic of early-2000s Daihatsu.
