The Daihatsu Trevis took the familiar city-car formula and gave it a distinctive retro character, with a tall five-door body and proportions that made the tiny hatchback surprisingly useful around town. Underneath that styling is a naturally aspirated 989 cc three-cylinder producing 57 BHP and 91 Nm, paired with a five-speed manual and front-wheel drive. The lightweight construction keeps the performance respectable for such a modest engine, with a 12.2-second 0–62 mph time.
From 2006–2009, the Trevis stood out through simplicity rather than technological ambition. Its four-seat cabin and 167–420-litre luggage area make it more practical than its diminutive dimensions suggest, while the 865 kg kerb weight helps the small engine cope without feeling excessively strained. Its 160 km/h top speed is more than adequate for its intended role, but the real attraction is the combination of compact urban dimensions, economical petrol power and retro-inspired styling that gave the Trevis a personality of its own.
