The 2018–2021 ALPINA X4 XD4 gave the compact luxury crossover a very different personality by pairing ALPINA performance engineering with a high-output diesel powertrain. Rather than relying on a large petrol engine, the XD4 used a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel with four turbochargers, turning the practical X4 into an unusually rapid long-distance performance machine.
The standout feature is its enormous 770 Nm of torque, available from low engine speeds and paired with ALPINA's eight-speed Switch-Tronic automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. That combination allows the XD4 to reach 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds while remaining capable of covering long distances with the efficiency expected from a diesel. ALPINA also gave the chassis its own calibration and fitted distinctive wheels and performance-oriented hardware, creating a crossover that feels substantially more specialized than a conventional BMW X4. The XD4's unusual blend of diesel torque, serious acceleration, everyday practicality, and ALPINA refinement is what makes it particularly memorable in the brand's history.
