The Talbot Horizon GL was designed as a practical family hatchback, combining a relatively spacious five-door body with front-wheel drive and straightforward mechanical engineering. Its angular styling reflects the late-1970s approach to compact cars, while the wide cabin and five-seat layout make it more accommodating than its modest exterior dimensions suggest. The transverse engine installation also helps preserve interior space by avoiding the need for a conventional longitudinal drivetrain. Rather than offering sporty performance, the Horizon focuses on comfortable everyday transport and sensible packaging.
This GL uses a 1,294 cc naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, rated at 58 hp and 74 lb·ft of torque at 2,800 rpm in the listed specification. Its overhead-valve design and four-speed manual gearbox reflect the Simca engineering carried into the Horizon range. Produced from 1978–1981, it combines this modest powertrain with independent suspension at both ends, front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. Its appeal lies in accessible mechanical design, useful cabin space and uncomplicated front-wheel-drive motoring.
