The Talbot Horizon GLD brought diesel economy to a practical five-door hatchback at a time when small family cars were still evolving rapidly. Its straightforward shape prioritises passenger space and everyday usability, with seating for five and front-wheel drive keeping the layout familiar and uncomplicated. Beneath the bonnet sits a naturally aspirated 1.9-litre diesel, part of the PSA XUD engine family. Rather than chasing performance, the GLD was designed around steady, economical motoring, with a durable mechanical layout and modest running demands suited to regular use.
The 1,905 cc engine produces 64 hp at 4,600 rpm and 88 lb·ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. A five-speed manual gearbox gives this later version an extra ratio for cruising, while the transverse front-engine arrangement helps make efficient use of the cabin space. The 1984–1986 GLD also uses torsion-bar suspension, a traditional approach to chassis design that suited the car’s straightforward engineering. Its appeal lies in practical packaging and relaxed diesel character rather than quick acceleration.
