The Matra Murena S was the final, more focused development of Matra’s unusual three-seat sports coupe. Its central driving position arrangement places three occupants side by side across the front cabin, while the mid-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive give the car a distinctive sporting layout. A fibreglass-bodied design over a steel structure helped distinguish the Murena from conventional front-engined coupes, and its low profile gives it a purposeful stance without sacrificing its unconventional practicality.

At the heart of the S is a naturally aspirated 2.2-litre four-cylinder producing 140 hp at 6,000 rpm and 138 lb·ft at 3,800 rpm. A five-speed manual gearbox sends power to the rear wheels, while the upgraded engine specification gives this version a stronger character than the standard Murena 2.2. Built in limited numbers during 1983–1984, the S marked a short-lived final chapter for the Murena before production ended.
