The Mazda Savanna RX-7 Turbo brought forced induction to the lightweight first-generation RX-7, giving Mazda’s rotary sports coupe a significant boost in performance while retaining its compact proportions and rear-wheel-drive character. Its two-door body and four-seat 2+2 layout kept the car focused on sporty driving, while the front-mid-mounted rotary engine helped maintain a balanced mechanical package. The turbocharged version became one of the most distinctive performance variants of the early RX-7 range.
The 1983–1985 Mazda Savanna RX-7 Turbo uses a turbocharged 1.1-liter Rotary 2 producing 163 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 7.1 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 7.3 seconds. Top speed reaches 130 mph, giving the lightweight coupe an engaging combination of rotary-engine character, turbocharged performance and rear-wheel-drive balance.
