The Mazda RX-7 Turbo brought forced induction to the second-generation RX-7, giving Mazda’s distinctive rotary sports coupe a significant performance boost while retaining its lightweight and focused character. Its sleek two-door body and four-seat layout combined classic sports-car proportions with some everyday practicality, while the front-mounted rotary engine and rear-wheel-drive layout supported an engaging driving balance. The FC-generation Turbo became an important step in the RX-7’s evolution, pairing Mazda’s high-revving rotary philosophy with turbocharged performance.
The 1987–1989 Mazda RX-7 Turbo uses a turbocharged 1.3-liter Rotary 2 producing 179 hp and 182 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 7.0 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 7.2 seconds. Top speed reaches 143 mph, giving the RX-7 Turbo an appealing combination of rotary-engine character, turbocharged power and rear-wheel-drive balance.
