The Mazda RX-7 S marked the arrival of the second-generation RX-7, bringing a more modern sports-coupe design while retaining Mazda’s distinctive rotary-engine philosophy. Its sleek two-door body, four-seat 2+2 layout and front-mounted engine gave it a more refined character than the original RX-7, while rear-wheel drive preserved the engaging driving balance enthusiasts expected. The FC generation also brought a more mature and sophisticated approach to Mazda’s lightweight rotary sports-car formula.
The 1986–1989 Mazda RX-7 S uses a naturally aspirated 1.3-liter Rotary 2 producing 148 hp and 134 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 8.1 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 8.4 seconds. Top speed reaches 130 mph, giving the RX-7 S an appealing combination of rotary-engine character, rear-wheel-drive balance and classic sports-coupe performance.
