The 1981–1984 Mazda Savanna RX-7 represented the evolution of Mazda’s lightweight rotary sports coupe, retaining the compact proportions and rear-wheel-drive character that made the original RX-7 distinctive. Its two-door body and four-seat 2+2 layout combined sports-car styling with limited everyday practicality, while the front-mid-mounted rotary engine helped maintain a balanced mechanical package. This second phase of the first-generation RX-7 continued Mazda’s commitment to high-revving rotary performance in a lightweight and focused coupe.
The 1981–1984 Mazda Savanna RX-7 uses a naturally aspirated 1.1-liter Rotary 2 producing 113 hp and 112 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 8.6 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 8.9 seconds. Top speed reaches 124 mph, giving the lightweight coupe an engaging combination of rotary-engine character, rear-wheel-drive balance and classic sports-car proportions.
