The Mazda Savanna RX-7 introduced Mazda’s lightweight rotary sports-car philosophy to the market, combining a sleek two-door coupe body with compact dimensions and a front-mid-mounted rotary engine. Its rear-wheel-drive layout and relatively low weight gave it an engaging character, while the four-seat 2+2 configuration added some practicality to its sports-car design. The first-generation RX-7 became an important model for Mazda, establishing the rotary-powered performance formula that would define the RX-7 name for generations to come.
The 1978–1981 Mazda Savanna RX-7 uses a naturally aspirated 1.1-liter Rotary 2 producing 104 hp and 108 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 9.2 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 9.5 seconds. Top speed reaches 118 mph, giving the lightweight coupe an engaging combination of rotary-engine character, rear-wheel-drive balance and classic sports-car proportions.
