The Mazda Savanna RX-7 SE represented a more mature evolution of the first-generation RX-7, retaining the lightweight sports-coupe formula while adopting a larger 1.3-liter rotary engine. Its two-door body, four-seat layout and front-mid-mounted engine gave it a distinctive character, while rear-wheel drive and a relatively low curb weight supported an engaging driving experience. The SE combined Mazda’s unusual rotary-engine technology with the clean proportions and focused character that defined the early RX-7.
The 1984–1985 Mazda Savanna RX-7 SE uses a naturally aspirated 1.3-liter Rotary 2 producing 135 hp and 133 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 7.8 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 8.1 seconds. Top speed reaches 125 mph, giving the lightweight coupe an appealing combination of rotary-engine character, rear-wheel-drive balance and classic sports-car performance.
