With its distinctive low-slung profile and traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, the 1983–1986 Marcos Mantula 3.5 V8 Coupé occupies an unusual place among British sports cars of its era. Rather than following the increasingly common path toward electronic sophistication, it combines a lightweight two-seat body with a naturally aspirated Rover V8 and a five-speed manual gearbox. The result is a compact performance coupe whose appeal comes from its straightforward mechanical character and relatively low mass.
The 3.5-liter V8 develops 190 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, giving the Mantula a 140-mph top speed and a 5.2-second 0–60 mph time. At just 1,984 lb, its power-to-weight ratio helps explain the strong acceleration, while double-wishbone front suspension and a live rear axle reflect the car's traditional chassis design. Vented front discs and rear drums complete the braking system, preserving the uncomplicated engineering approach that makes this Marcos particularly distinctive.
