The Peugeot 106 Electrique was an early attempt to make electric mobility practical in a familiar, everyday hatchback. Developed with French engineering company Heuliez, it retained the compact proportions and straightforward layout of the standard 106 while replacing the petrol engine with an electric powertrain. Its conventional appearance concealed a pioneering approach to zero-emission motoring at a time when battery-powered cars remained unusual on European roads. Produced across the 1995–2003 model years, the Electrique became an important early example of a mass-market manufacturer exploring electric transportation.
A front-mounted electric motor delivers up to 27 hp, sending power to the front wheels through a direct-drive system. Nickel-cadmium batteries supplied by Saft provide the energy, while a top speed of 56 mph suits urban travel and shorter regional journeys. The four-seat cabin and familiar three-door hatchback body make the car approachable for everyday use. Although its range and performance are modest by modern electric-car standards, the 106 Electrique demonstrated how established small-car platforms could be adapted for battery-powered driving.
