The Peugeot 106 XR 1.4 brought a practical, understated character to the compact hatchback class, offering the sort of simplicity that made small European cars appealing for everyday use. Its short body and lightweight construction suited crowded urban streets, while the tidy hatchback layout provided useful versatility without demanding much space. Rather than chasing the performance image of Peugeot’s sportier 106 variants, the XR focused on accessible driving, straightforward engineering, and economical motoring. Its appeal came from being easy to live with while retaining the nimble feel of a genuinely small car.
Spanning 1996 to 2001, the 106 XR 1.4 used a naturally aspirated 1.4-liter four-cylinder petrol engine producing 74 hp and 82 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission sent power to the front wheels, keeping the driving experience familiar and direct. With a reported top speed of 112 mph, it offered adequate performance for a lightweight hatchback designed primarily around daily usability. The XR remains a representative example of practical 1990s motoring, combining compact dimensions, modest power, and uncomplicated mechanical design in one approachable package.
