The Ultima Can-Am brought the British specialist manufacturer's lightweight, mid-engined philosophy to an open-cockpit roadster. Its low-slung body, exposed performance hardware and two-seat layout give it a distinctly competition-inspired character, while the tubular spaceframe chassis and composite bodywork help keep mass under control. Unlike a conventional mass-produced sports car, the Can-Am was offered in component form as well as turnkey specification, allowing owners to choose and install different powertrain configurations.
In the listed Chevrolet LS1 specification, a naturally aspirated 5,665 cc V8 develops 350 hp at 5,600 rpm and 365 lb·ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. A five-speed manual transaxle sends power to the rear wheels, with the engine mounted longitudinally behind the occupants. The combination of 920 kg kerb weight and independent double-wishbone suspension at both ends gives the Can-Am its focused performance character. This specification covers the 2001–2006 model range.
