The Proton Waja, sold as the Impian in the UK and some European markets, marked Proton’s move toward a more mature family-saloon design. Its four-door body, clean styling, and front-wheel-drive layout focused on comfort and everyday practicality rather than sporting excess. The cabin accommodated five occupants, while the separate boot offered useful room for shopping and travel luggage. With MacPherson-strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension, the Waja combined a conventional mechanical layout with a chassis designed for everyday road use. The Impian name also reflected its role as a practical alternative to established European family cars in its export markets.
For the 2005–2007 range, power came from a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre, 16-valve inline-four producing 101 hp at 6,000 rpm and 103 lb-ft of torque at 2,750 rpm. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sent power to the front wheels. With a top speed of 116 mph and a 0–60 mph time of 11.6 seconds, the Impian prioritised steady, everyday performance. Its five-seat cabin and 15.5 cubic feet of luggage capacity made it suitable for family travel and routine use, while the naturally aspirated engine kept the powertrain straightforward.
