The Proton Waja, marketed as the Impian in the UK and some European markets, represented Proton’s move toward a more mature family-saloon design. Its clean styling, conventional four-door body, and front-wheel-drive layout focused on everyday comfort and practicality rather than sporting excess. The cabin accommodated five occupants, while the separate boot provided useful room for shopping and travel luggage. With MacPherson-strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension, the Waja combined a familiar mechanical layout with a chassis designed for routine road use. Its balanced proportions and functional design made it suitable for commuting, family duties, and longer journeys.
For the 2007–2009 range, power came from a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre, 16-valve inline-four producing 110 hp at 6,000 rpm and 103 lb-ft of torque at 2,750 rpm. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sent power to the front wheels. With a top speed of 116 mph and a 0–60 mph time of 11.6 seconds, the Impian prioritised steady everyday performance over outright acceleration. Its five-seat cabin and 14.5 cubic feet of luggage capacity provided practical space for passengers and belongings, making it a versatile family saloon for everyday use.
