The Jaguar XK-SS was born from competition, created by converting a small number of D-Type racing cars into road-going machines. That origin gave it a character unlike ordinary sports cars: the body was dramatically low, the cockpit was tightly focused, and the mechanical package came directly from Jaguar’s racing experience. With its distinctive fin behind the driver and open two-seat layout, the XK-SS looked every bit as purposeful as its racing ancestor. Its extremely limited production also turned it into one of Jaguar’s most significant and collectible early performance cars.
The 1957 XK-SS uses a naturally aspirated 3.4-liter inline-six producing 262 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual transmission drives the rear wheels, allowing 0–60 mph in 5.5 seconds and a 143-mph top speed. The front-mounted engine, lightweight 2,050-pound body and rear-wheel-drive layout give the car the focused mechanical character expected from its competition-derived origins.
