The Isdera Spyder 033-16 was conceived with the sort of individuality rarely seen in production sports cars. Its low-slung open body, rear-mid-engine layout and tiny production numbers placed it far outside the mainstream performance-car world of the 1980s. Beneath the unusual styling sat a Mercedes-derived four-cylinder, showing that Isdera was more interested in creating a compact, lightweight driving machine than simply fitting the largest engine available. The result is a rare German roadster whose unconventional proportions are as memorable as its engineering.
Produced from 1985–1988, the Spyder 033-16 uses a naturally aspirated 2.3-liter inline-four developing 182 hp and 173 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual gearbox sends power to the rear wheels, while the car reaches 144 mph and completes 0–60 mph in 6.2 seconds. Its rear-mid-engine placement and low 2,028-pound curb weight give the Spyder a particularly focused mechanical layout.
