The Isdera Spyder 033i represents the beginning of a remarkably unconventional sports-car story. Instead of following the established formula of a front-engined roadster, Isdera placed the engine behind the occupants and built the car around a lightweight, low-slung body. Its unusual proportions and tiny production scale gave it an identity that was far removed from the mainstream performance cars of the 1980s. The Spyder was less about headline power than creating an intimate two-seat driving machine with a distinctly hand-built character.
The 1982–1988 Spyder 033i uses a naturally aspirated 1.8-liter inline-four producing 137 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels, while 0–60 mph takes 7.3 seconds and top speed reaches 124 mph. With its rear-mid-engine layout and 2,028-pound curb weight, the Spyder keeps the mechanical package compact and focused.
