The Pantera Targa is one of the rarest interpretations of De Tomaso’s long-running mid-engine formula. Rather than creating a completely new open-top model, the final Pantera was transformed into a targa through specialist work by Pavesi of Milan, giving the familiar wedge-shaped sports car a removable roof section while preserving its dramatic V8 character. The result feels more intimate and exotic than the conventional coupe, with the engine positioned behind the cabin and the rear wheels delivering the power.
For 1990–1993, the Targa represented the closing chapter of the Pantera story. Its 4.9-liter Ford-based V8 produced 300 hp, giving the two-seater enough authority to reach 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. Only a handful were converted, making this version exceptionally scarce even within the already limited final Pantera series. That rarity, combined with Marcello Gandini’s refreshed styling and the unusual open-air configuration, gives the Targa a distinctive place in De Tomaso history.
