The Pantera GT5 turned De Tomaso’s already dramatic sports car into something considerably more imposing. Wide arches, enormous rear tyres and a lowered, aggressive stance gave it the visual presence of a race-bred machine, while the mid-mounted Ford V8 remained the heart of the experience. The emphasis was unmistakably on theatre and mechanical character rather than subtlety, making the GT5 one of the most extroverted versions of the Pantera.
For 1980–1985, the GT5 paired that flamboyant bodywork with a 5.8-liter V8 producing 345 hp and a five-speed manual gearbox. Its rear-wheel-drive layout and lightweight construction helped turn the big engine into serious performance, with a claimed 174-mph top speed. The combination of Italian styling, American V8 muscle and a broad, competition-inspired stance gave the GT5 a personality all its own. It represented the Pantera at one of its most unapologetically aggressive stages, bridging classic supercar proportions with the increasingly muscular aesthetic of the 1980s.
