The Pantera L marked an important refinement of De Tomaso’s original mid-engine idea, bringing more comfort and usability without losing the character that made the Pantera distinctive. Its low, wedge-shaped body still carried the visual drama of an Italian exotic, while the Ford Cleveland V8 behind the cabin provided the unmistakable American side of the formula. The L, short for “Lusso,” was developed as a more polished version of the car rather than a completely different design.
Introduced in 1972–1990, the Pantera L combined that sharper road-going character with a 5.8-liter V8 producing 325 hp. Its five-speed manual transaxle and rear-wheel-drive layout kept the experience firmly driver-focused, while the improved equipment made the car easier to use beyond the occasional spirited drive. The result was a fascinating blend of Italian styling, American V8 muscle and everyday refinement—one that helped the Pantera remain relevant across a remarkably long production life.
