The Maserati Shamal arrived as a particularly aggressive interpretation of the Italian grand tourer, combining sharp, angular styling with a powerful twin-turbocharged V8 beneath its long front end. The 1990–1995 model retains the four-seat, two-door configuration expected of a grand tourer, but its rear-wheel-drive layout and six-speed manual transmission give it a more focused character than a conventional luxury coupe. Its distinctive design, including the pronounced rear treatment, makes the Shamal immediately recognizable among Maserati’s performance cars of the period.
At the heart of the car is a 3.2-liter bi-turbo V8 producing 322 hp and 322 lb-ft of torque. It reaches 168 mph and accelerates from 0–60 mph in 5.1 seconds, while its 3,124-lb curb weight gives the engine substantial performance work to deliver. MacPherson-strut front suspension and trailing-arm rear suspension underpin the chassis, with vented front discs and solid rear discs providing braking. A 420-liter luggage compartment also preserves the practical side of its grand-touring role.
